What is a dental emergency?

If it’s bothering you then it’s an emergency.  Generally when you break a tooth it’s an emergency especially if you have pain.  The outside of your tooth is enamel which is a very strong substance.  To get decay the bacteria in your mouth need to break through the enamel to get into the interior of your tooth.  If the decay grows and becomes large a cave develops within your tooth and when you bite down on something hard your tooth can break.

In the middle of your tooth is a nerve.   If the decay reaches the nerve you will probably get a toothache.  Think of Tom Hanks in the movie Cast Away.  If you have tooth pain you have a dental emergency and want to get out of pain quickly.

Sometimes due to stress you clamp down or grind your teeth.  The added pressure over time can break a tooth also leading to a dental emergency as stated above.  Sometimes due to a trauma a tooth can get knocked out of your jaw and it needs to be replaced into your jaw bone quickly if possible.

Sometimes things just happen.  You have an impacted wisdom tooth which has been lying dormant for years and for whatever reason now it wants to be known and you gives you pressure and/or pain.

What happens when you call us for a dental emergency?

Our main goal is to get you out of pain and then offer you alternatives for treatment.  We explain the advantages, disadvantages, risks and the costs involved.  Once out of pain you can make an informed decision on what is best for you.

What happens is you call the office and we get you in that day.  We always have an open operatory for situations just like yours.  You fill out a medical history and then we listen to what you have to say.   Most patients if in pain know where their pain is and have a general idea of what needs to be done. X rays are then taken to help us confirm your situation.

How do I pay for a dental emergency?

Most dental insurances cover the emergency exam and necessary x rays.  As for the actual treatment the insurance generally pays a percentage of the cost for treatment.  We will always inform you of all costs involved before definitive treatment.  The priority is always to get you out of pain first.

What do we strive to achieve with a dental emergency?

To get you out of pain so you can go back to do what you do and inform you of any other developing oral health situations you should be aware of so you don’t experience another dental emergency.  Prevention is always better than dealing with a painful situation.
